The Effects of Cohabitation Before Marriage
Throughout the course of the semester, Dr. Beverly Thomason’s sociology class has extensively covered many of the sociological aspects concerned with families, inside and outside of the home environment. One of the aspects that the class has not covered is the practice of cohabiting and its effects, other wise known as living together and having a sexual relationship without being married. We have reviewed this in reference to G.B.L.T. families but not within male and female relationships. One might ask themselves, how does this effect the dynamics of the longevity and quality of a marriage of those who live together and eventually do get married. As well as, the effects that this practice when pregnancy is involved.
Divorce in the United States has become an epidemic. Researcher Jay Teachman stated, “virtually all studies of the relationship between premarital cohabitation and divorce have found a positive link” (Teachman, 444). Jay Teachman also stated
“Social scientists have asked what these trends mean for the nature and functioning of marriage. One of the most clearly defined correlates of co-habitation is an increased risk of marital dissolution Marriages preceded by a spell of cohabitation are as much as 50% more likely to end in divorce at any marital duration than marriages not preceded by cohabitation” (Teachman, 444).
It is alarming to hear that with such high rates of divorce, 38% of couples cohabit before marriage (Teachman, 470). By living together before marriage you put the longevity of your marriage at risk. If you live together before marriage you are more likely to become divorced then if you lived separately beforehand. Jay Teachman’s research states that of the 50% of couples, who lived together before marriage and then became divorced, 33.3% of which were divorced within 1 year, 20.6% of which were divorced within 5 years, and 34% of which were divorced within 10 years (Teachman, 449).
Almost all research points to the same findings, which makes the rates of divorce a remarkably easy number to lower, since a contributor to the cause is known. With a national divorce rate of 50% you think couples would stop this behavior if they truly wanted to be married to the same person for the reset of their life. Research group Dush, Cohan, and Amato found similar evidence as Jay Teachman. Dush, Cohan, and Amato stated, “The results show that across the two marriage cohorts, spouses who cohabited prior to marriage had poorer marital quality and greater marital instability than those who did not cohabit. Thus, cohabitation was associated with more troubled unions, irrespective of the decade of marriage” (Dush, 544). The group also found that “Couples are 151% more likely to become divorced if you live together before hand” (Dush, 544). Age, as in most studies, was also incorporated into this study, and Dush, Cohan, and Amato reported, “The odds of divorce were lower among younger respondents than among older respondents who cohabited (Dush, 544). This information was surprising because the national average age of marriage is rising.
Bringing children into any situation can make it more complex, especially a relationship. Wendy Manning studied the effects that children play in the role of living together before marriage and divorce. According to researcher Wendy Manning “having a child during cohabitation increases the instability of the couple’s relationship by 18%” (Manning, 675).
Manning also discovered that “A child born during cohabitation has a greater effect on the instability of a subsequent marriage than on the initial cohabitation. In other words, a child born in cohabitation is associated with instability only once the couple marries” (Manning, 682). A pregnancy is a difficult time for a women so it is understandable that it could create pressure and tension on any or all of the relationships during that time, not only with her spouses.
With all this information publicly available it’s a wonder why couples that truly care for one another and want their marriage to last continue to live with each other before marriage. Before moving in with a significant other it is important not to make rash decisions and weigh the pros and cons that this could have on your relationship in the long run, not just a year down the road.
